What's changing?

New facilities, improved services

Our new waste management services help Wakefield Council to increase recycling across the district and reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill.

A number of changes will be introduced over the next three years:

 2012 – 2014/15

We carried out extensive work to improve your Household Waste Recycling Centres by:

  • Making them easier to use
  • Opening them seven days a week
  • Providing more staff
  • Improving on site signage

We have also refurbished two existing Household Waste Recycling Centres at Normanton and Denby Dale Road.

Work was completed at the Normanton Household Waste Recycling Centre in 2014. Click here for details:

The refurbishment of the Denby Dale Road Household Waste Recycling Centre is now complete, this centre re opened on Monday 2 March 2015. Click here for details:

Our brand new state of the art Household Waste Recycling Centres at Glasshoughton and South Kirkby are now open to the public.

All our Household Waste Recycling Centres offer late night opening one night a week during British Summer Time Hours

Work is almost complete to build the new Waste Treatment Facility at South Kirkby which will include:

  • A waste treatment facility for treating waste collected from households and businesses
  • A materials recycling facility for sorting recyclables collected from households
  • A composting facility for composting garden waste collected from households and from Household Waste Recycling Centres
  • An Education Centre for visitors

For more information on the development at South Kirkby, and the new or refurbished Household Waste Recycling Centres please click here

During this time there will be no change to your bin collections, bulky waste collection and skip hire.

2014/15 onwards

When the development of the Waste Treatment Facility at South Kirkby is complete, the Council will need to change your kerbside bin collections. The Council will advertise these changes nearer to the time and help to make sure that you understand how these changes affect you. For more information click here:
