Volunteer Marketing Assistant 

About the opportunity

Providing marketing support to help the Education Programme to increase reach and engagement. You may want to support and develop a new marketing strategy over a short term basis or perhaps provide longer term support for our programme. We ask for a minimum three month commitment for this role.

About Shanks Waste Management’s Educational Outreach Programme

Shanks Waste Management is one of the largest providers of local authority waste services in the UK. Shanks work in partnership with Wakefield Council to manage the district's waste and have built a state of the art new waste treatment facility which helps to reduce landfill, recycle more and create sustainable energy.

As part of the contract between Shanks and Wakefield Council we run a waste education programme which aims to educate the local community about the importance of recycling and caring for the environment. We have a purpose built education centre in South Kirkby where we deliver educational events for schools and communities and also go out to visit local groups to deliver interactive workshops and talks. Last year we delivered 144 events across the Wakefield area and worked with over 4500 people. The scope of the programme is broad, we work with adult groups, primary schools, secondary schools, scouts, guides, groups with learning disabilities and anyone who may value from our work. We also run a number of specific campaigns throughout the year which are targeted around specific issues.  

What we're looking for

A volunteer interested in gaining experience in supporting an Environmental Outreach programme.

> An interest in marketing is essential but specific qualifications are not

> You need to have good interpersonal, communication and teamwork skills.

> Creative flair

> An eye for detail

> Good IT skills (MS Office)

Training and ongoing support will be given. A DBS check will be required.

Practical Considerations

You will have an enthusiasm for environmental education and a desire to market our services.

You can volunteer during normal working hours which typically range from 8am-5pm Monday-Friday but occasional weekend and evening work is sometimes required.

You can help out over a short term or long term basis for as long or as little as you want. Although we do have some minimum requirements. We would like someone who can commit to a minimum of two hours per week over a period of at least 3 months. Contact us for further information and to discuss your options.

Volunteer Education Assistant

Support the Education Officer with hands on education work. Help to develop and prepare resources, support the schools and communities that we work with and prepare the Education Centre for visits. This role is particularly suited for people looking for long term volunteering.

Volunteer Reuse/Recycled Artist

About the opportunity

Create one off recycled art projects and installations which will be displayed in our visitor centre. Improve our classroom and outdoor areas artistic appeal. This role is particularly suitable for people looking for one off and short term volunteering.

> A creative flair is essential

> You need to have good interpersonal, communication and teamwork skills.

Training and ongoing support will be given. A DBS check will be required.

Practical Considerations

You will have an enthusiasm for reused, repurposed and recycled art.

You can help out over a short term basis which is project based or over long term basis.  If you want to volunteer on a short term basis we do expect that you will stay with us for the duration of the art installation.

Volunteer Reuse Campaign Project Officer

About the opportunity

Support a specific campaign. This term we will be focusing on our Reuse campaign and you will be supporting our Monster Competition which is a competition for local primary schools to get involved in. Primary Schools have been challenged to make monsters out of rubbish and these will be voted on by the general public at a prominent public location this February.

In this position you will be:

  • supporting the schools involved in this campaign
  • helping with the design and presentation of our “monster shop”
  • assisting with the voting system

This role ends in February 2017 but there may be other short-medium term placements thereafter which focus on another project.

Improve your craft skills and make recycled planters, raised beds, and outdoor furniture/art for our Education Centre's outdoor area. This role is particularly suitable for people looking for one off and short term volunteering.

You will have an enthusiasm for reused, repurposed and recycled craft.

You can help out over a short term basis which is project based or over long term basis. If you want to volunteer on a short term basis we do expect that you will stay with us until you have finished your craft project.
