Role Profile: Senior Operations and Contract Manager

Reporting to: Contract Director

Location: Wakefield Project Sites

We are currently seeking a Senior Operations and Contract Manager to be based in Wakefield.   

Overall purpose of the role

  • This position will be based across the Wakefield PFI sites reporting to the Contract Director. You will have full responsibility at Senior Operations level for some/all of the facilities including the RWTF, IVC, MDR MRF, HWRC and Transport Operations.
  • This position will also manage the PFI Contract and act as direct liaison with the Council client ensuring that the project agreement is managed in a timely and effective manner.

Main responsibilities

  • The primary function of the role is to ensure the safe, efficient and financially effective operation of the facilities along with management of the PFI Contract.
  • Work closely with SHEQ to ensure both operational and PFI contractual obligations are met
  • Excellent man management and time management skills are required
  • Strong knowledge of health and safety requirements in an operational environment is essential. The successful person will be responsible for ensuring safety standards are constantly improved and full compliance is achieved with both internal and external bodies (HSE)
  • A good working knowledge of Human resources policies procedures. The successful person will be expected to undertake detailed investigations to provide evidence for HR procedures to be followed
  • Experience of handling disciplinary procedures from investigation to hearing and appeal hearing levels.
  • The person will have a direct impact on the financial results of the division and a commercial understanding of the impacts in changes in operating activity is a prerequisite
  • Tuning of existing operations and driving improvements in operational performance and the indivdual will be analytical of the impacts of changes to current processes and procedures
  • Budget responsibility and accountability, attendance & participation in monthly meetings to review & analyse variance to budgets/forecast
  • The role will also require regular communications with our stakeholders so the person will need to be able to be diplomatic and professional and maintain a calm temperament whilst working under pressure
  • An ambitious can-do attitude will only serve to ensure this person is successful in this role

Value added by this role

  • The successful candidate will have extensive experience of P and L management. Experience of production and use of KPIs to manage a business unit. 
  • The successful candidate will have demonstrated management and compliance of detailed contracts in the PFI environment or other service led environments.
  • Confident self-starter with ambition to drive the operations forward whilst keeping an eye on the financial impact of changes to operating standards.
  • A determined negotiator who commands respect in their professional approach to sometimes difficult situations. 
  • Excellent management and organisational skills are essential. Ability to remain calm and level headed is essential. 

Training / Qualifications

Essential:

  • Degree level education
  • IOSH managing safely qualification or equivalent

Desirable:

  • COTC in waste treatment/transfer is desirable
  • CPC would be preferred but not essential
  • Working in a PFI environment

Experience/competencies required:

  • Experience preferably in the waste industry, but would also consider other process based or practical based industries such as waste water treatment, chemical, food process and quarry/mine management

Position:  Multi-Skilled Operator

Location: South Kirkby

We are currently recruiting for a Multi-Skilled Operator to be based at our South Kirkby site in Wakefield.  Reporting to the MRF Team Leader/s, the individuals will be responsible for the day to day working within the MDR MRF operation. 

Shift pattern: Any 5 from 7 working a 38 hour week between the hours of 06:00 – 22:00

Overall purpose of the role

To ensure that the facilities reception area is kept clean and tidy and all bays and containers are kept to manageable levels. To promote good housekeeping standards throughout the Facility. To work alongside the Facility’s shovel driver and control operations with the MDR MRF reception area. Working close with the MRF Team Leader to ensure all aspects of Facility’s SHEQ are met. Making sure daily inspections are completed and any defects found are raised promptly. Making sure stock levels are controlled through collections as to not over-fill the facility.

Main responsibilities

  • Daily walk around and reporting of all non-conformances on equipment.
  • Ensure daily checks are done on mobile plant.
  • Empty Pre-sort rejects bay with Tele-Truck
  • Empty Fine Ferrous bay with Tele-Truck
  • Keep WEEE bay at a manageable level using IBC’s.
  • Keep scrap metal at a manageable level using Containers
  • Responsible for the day to day House-Keeping within the MDR MRF facility.
  • Ensure all relevant paperwork is completed accurately and promptly.
  • Manage the reporting of all safety or environmental issues to the Site Management team.
  • To carry out any other such reasonable job related tasks that the Company may require.
  • Ensure that all company Risk Assessments / Site procedures are followed correctly.

Value added by this role

  • The controlled and safe operation of the MDR MRF reception area’s rejects and scrap metals bays and containers. The overall housekeeping of the MDR MRF facility including outside facility.

Training / Qualifications

Desirable:

  • FLT licence/competency
  • Tele Truck Licence/Competency
  • Loading shovel licence/competency

Experience/competencies required:

  • Good understanding of health, safety and environmental compliance.
  • Good people skills
  • Good numerate and written skills
  • Good organisation skills

Key relationships:

  • Reporting directly to the MRF Team Leader/s
  • IVC/MRF Manager
  • Senior Operations Manager/s

Candidates will have recent experience in a similar role (preferably in the waste industry although other process based industries will be considered).  A good understanding of health and safety issues is required.  You will have good customer service and communication skills and be used to working in a team.  Due to the variety of the role, excellent organisation skills are essential & the requirement to work additional hours as the business requires.

We are currently seeking two Education and Recycling Advisor’s to be based in Wakefield on a two year fixed term contract.

The post holders will be based at the educational facility at South Kirkby, Wakefield or out on site or locations where events are being held. The post holder is expected to work across a number of Wakefield residential areas and will require their own vehicle.

Overall purpose of the role

  • Responsible for supporting, developing and assisting in the delivery of educational and recycling events and programmes which encourage behavioural change and increase levels of good quality recycling.
  • To deliver advice and guidance to residents, community groups, partners and schools to enable them to make effective recycling choices.
  • To provide an educational support role at the Education Centre at South Kirkby.

Main responsibilities

  • Assisting the Education Officer to develop, deliver and manage the educational programmes and resources for schools and community groups at the South Kirkby Education Centre.
  • Developing and delivering targeted high-quality communications, interaction and information across a range of activities aimed at encouraging and enabling behaviours around reduce, re-use, recycle and recovery in the Community.
  • Accountable for maintaining collaborative working relationships.
  • Accurately maintain and evaluate sensitive information, databases and performance statistics in a confidential manner.
  • Knowledge of district specific recycling processes which allow the post holder to address enforcement issues and promote recycling.
  • Producing information, providing advice and guidance to residents face to face at the door step and at roadshows, events and over the telephone.
  • Support a range of behavioural change campaigns and waste minimisation initiatives by flexibly delivering specific activities across the Wakefield District.
  • Engaging the public in recycling, encouraging interaction and supporting how the learning is passed on and recycling best practice.
  • Make best use of digital technology and social media to improve communications with public and partners.
  • Ensure health and safety standards are always achieved and child protection policies followed.
  • Assist with maintenance of the Education Centre in South Kirkby by tidying the area, updating displays, maintaining stock counts, and weeding/planting in the outdoor educational site.
  • Provide administrative support for the education service.
  • Other duties deemed to be within the scope of the role.

  • Strong customer service skills and ability to deal with the public in a positive and tactful manner, even in difficult situations

  • Ability to demonstrate good ICT skills and use of digital media in line with corporate policy

Providing marketing support to help the Education Programme to increase reach and engagement. You may want to support and develop a new marketing strategy over a short term basis or perhaps provide longer term support for our programme. We ask for a minimum three month commitment for this role.

As part of the contract between Renewi and Wakefield Council we run a waste education programme which aims to educate the local community about the importance of recycling and caring for the environment. We have a purpose built education centre in South Kirkby where we deliver educational events for schools and communities and also go out to visit local groups to deliver interactive workshops and talks. Last year we delivered 144 events across the Wakefield area and worked with over 4500 people. Practical Considerations

You will have an enthusiasm for environmental education and a desire to market our services.

You can volunteer during normal working hours which typically range from 8am-5pm Monday-Friday but occasional weekend and evening work is sometimes required.

You can help out over a short term or long term basis for as long or as little as you want. Although we do have some minimum requirements. Reuse Campaign Project Officer 

About the opportunity

Support a specific campaign. This term we will be focusing on our Reuse campaign and you will be supporting our Monster Competition which is a competition for local primary schools to get involved in. Primary Schools have been challenged to make monsters out of rubbish and these will be voted on by the general public at a prominent public location this February.

In this position you will be:

  • supporting the schools involved in this campaign
  • helping with the design and presentation of our “monster shop”
  • assisting with the voting system

This role ends in February 2017 but there may be other short-medium term placements thereafter which focus on another project.
