Shanks Municipal Services is one of the largest providers of local authority waste services in the UK. It's parent, Shanks Group plc, run waste processing and resource management operations around the world

The company's aim is to "make more from waste". At its high-tech facilities, Shanks ensures waste can either be recycled or turned into useful products like energy and fertiliser.

To do this, Shanks uses the latest technologies:

  • Mechanical biological treatment plants that treat waste and use composting or anaerobic digestion to turn it into useful products.
  • Materials recovery facilities that prepare recycled materials for re-use.

Overall, Shanks manages just under eight million tonnes of waste per year, with an overall recycling and recovery rate of 70%.

Its fully operational local authority operations in the UK include:

  • East London Waste Council
  • Dumfries and Galloway Council
  • Argyll and Bute Council
  • Cumbria County Council
