A Tailored Programme for Schools and the Community

Shanks and Wakefield Council believe in working with this and future generations to help improve our recycling and recovery rates.  We are educating people about our facilities; the role everyone plays in recycling; and the benefits for the community.

Shanks’ Education Officer delivers interactive workshops and assemblies to schools, colleges and youth groups, as well as visits and talks to the public at community events.  Shanks are keen that everyone helps to make Wakefield a more environmentally friendly District.  Sessions delivered by the Shanks Education Officer are free.

Due to the success of the Environmental Education programme we now have a new purpose built education centre which offers an experience which cannot be replicated in the school environment or other external places.

Primary Schools

To book an outreach session please download the menu of current primary school sessions here and send a completed booking form to our Education Officer Jade Wilkes (jade.wilkes@shanks.co.uk). To book a visit to the education centre, please contact the Education Officer and she will send you a range of options for your bespoke day. Our Education Centre offers a much wider range of topics than our outreach programme can possibly cover due to the dedicated resources at the site. Topics not only cover waste related issues but also complementary areas such as biodiversity and land/resource use. Further details can be found here

Secondary Schools, Sixth Form and Colleges

If you are interested in any workshops in your school/college or visits to the education centre then please send our Education Officer Jade Wilkes (jade.wilkes@shanks.co.uk) an email outlining what kind of events or activities that you are interested in. Our Education Officer can plan something that meets your bespoke needs and links in with the curriculum or any particular programmes that your students are involved in.

Community Groups

If you are interested in an activity for your youth group or community group please send a brief email outlining the dates you are interested in and details of your group to jade.wilkes@shanks.co.uk and our Education Officer will get in touch to discuss organising a bespoke session for you, either at your facilities or at the education centre.
